Man City go top as Haaland nets brace

With Arsenal travelling to face Everton in the Saturday evening kick-off, Manchester City had the chance to go top of the Premier League table, for a few hours at least, and they did what was required with a 3-0 win over West Ham United.

Erling Haaland scored his 18th goal of the season after just five minutes, slamming home a rebound after Alphonse Areola kept out his first effort.

Tijjani Reijnders doubled the home side’s lead before half-time, with Rayan Cherki’s jinking run providing Haaland with a simple assist for his Dutch team-mate.

And Haaland grabbed his third goal contribution of the afternoon in the 69th minute as he got on the end of a flowing City move to secure all three points.

Lewis-Potter condemns Wolves to 10 consecutive defeats

Brentford continued Wolverhampton Wanderers’ sorry run in the Premier League as Keane Lewis-Potter scored a double at Molineux.

Slack defending allowed the 24-year-old to ghost in and fire past Jose Sa with 18 minutes gone in the second half.

And Lewis-Potter then ensured The Bees’ victory in the 83rd minute with a pinpoint finish on the stretch, via a floated Mikkel Damsgaard cross.

The hosts’ loss was compounded by Jorgen Strand Larsen seeing his 88th-minute penalty saved by Caoimhin Kelleher, as the Norwegian’s wait for his second league goal of the season goes on.

Despite pushing Arsenal close the previous Saturday, Wolves have now lost 10 league matches in a row, failing to score in all but three of those defeats.

Keith Andrews’ side, meanwhile, grabbed their first win of December to move level on points with Newcastle United.

Broja stops the rot for Clarets

Armando Broja’s 90th-minute equaliser ended a run of seven straight league losses for Burnley after Antoine Semenyo thought he had earned Bournemouth a 1-0 win at the Vitality Stadium.

The 1-1 draw was yet another disappointing result for Andoni Iraola, having not seen his Cherries win in the Premier League since beating Nottingham Forest at the end of October.

Ghana international Semenyo saw his opener arrive in the 67th minute, curling home after Josh Laurent lost his footing when attempting a clearance.

But a late corner was taken short by the visitors and Broja grabbed his first goal in Burnley colours, nodding in substitute Marcus Edwards’ cross.

The Albania international’s header edged Burnley to within five points of safety, with 17th-placed Leeds United in action against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Spoils shared between Sunderland and Seagulls

A drab stalemate on the south coast saw the points shared between Sunderland and Brighton & hove Albion at the American Express Stadium.

Brian Brobbey and Omar Alderete had the game’s best chances in either half, but The Seagulls finished the match the stronger side.

For The Black Cats, who earned a 1-0 win in the Tyne-Wear derby the previous weekend, the draw boosted them into fifth position.

But Crystal Palace, Manchester United and Liverpool all have the chance to leapfrog Regis Le Bris’ team.

Pedro stunner rescues point in thriller

In the lunchtime kick-off between Newcastle and Chelsea, live on TNT Sports and discovery+Joao Pedro scored a stunning solo equaliser to earn The Blues a 2-2 draw at St James’ Park.

Nick Woltemade atoned for his own goal in the Tyne-Wear derby by netting a brace inside 20 minutes to send the home support delirious.

But Reece James struck a perfectly placed free-kick to reduce the deficit after half-time, and Pedro completed the comeback with a brilliant solo effort from a Robert Sanchez assist.

The drama was compounded by referee Andy Madley opting not to award a penalty for Newcastle for Trevoh Chalobah’s challenge on Anthony Gordon, an incident later deemed a “stonewall” penalty by Eddie Howe.
