Florian Wirtz celebrates first Liverpool goal as manager Arne Slot predicts ‘many more’ to come after win over Wolves

Pressure to net his maiden Liverpool goal had been building on the 22-year-old Germany international, but, speaking after his side’s victory, he revealed he always had belief that he would open his account.

Wirtz told Sky Sports: “It was very nice the feeling on the pitch with the fans around. I was very happy and I still am.

“I was confident that I would score one day. I wanted to start scoring earlier and assisting, but it was like this and I have to accept it. I just knew that it would come and I try to keep going like that.

“We played a brilliant first half. We lost the game and got it back. Everyone was working hard. In the last 20 minutes, we made it a bit difficult. I cannot explain why. We have to change that.

“That’s how we want to do it. We want to be there and be on top of the table. It’s not been an easy start for us, but we’re doing better and getting the points.”

Slot was also pleased with his side’s win, saying that his team had often played well without getting three points, and that he was happy to make sure that he ended the match with the result in his favour against the league’s bottom side.

He said: “(I’m) happy because in football it’s about results. So many times this season, our performances have been good without the results. The end product of it all, a win, is what I like.

“There are positive things to take. I had to bring Conor Bradley and Cody Gakpo in, who haven’t trained much this week. To still win is a positive.”

Discussing Wirtz breaking his drought, he suggested that the player had already been appreciated for other contributions on the pitch, but he expected more goals to come by now.

“The team have seen how much he did already for us,” he began. “Creating chances and being so close to a goal.

“He will go on and score many more goals than one for us. I think Florian did more than only score today.”

Liverpool’s late forward, Diogo Jota, was honoured at Anfield as his two sons were mascots for the game, and Slot paid tribute to him and his family, who were in attendance.

He concluded: “It’s been touching so many times already. Our fans have shown the greatest respect every single game to his family, but also fans from other clubs. Today we saw the same. Another special moment for us but also for his wife and children.”
