Reaction from Hugo Ekitike after his two goals help Liverpool see off Brighton 2-0 at Anfield in the Premier League
Hugo Ekitike says Liverpool have not outlined any new targets for their season after Saturday’s 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion moved them up to sixth in the Premier League. Ekitike scored twice to take his campaign’s tally up to 10 as the champions got back to winning ways in the league after successive draws with Sunderland and Leeds United.
France international Ekitike scored after just 46 seconds against the Seagulls before he nodded in Mohamed Salah’s second-half corner to secure the points and make it five unbeaten for Arne Slot’s men across all competitions.
With the champions now seven points behind leaders Arsenal, Ekitike has rejected talk of what would represent a successful campaign for the Reds, insisting the mentality at the club is simply to win every game.
“I wouldn’t say (it was a) perfect (day),” Ekitike, who was withdrawn with cramp in the second half, told LFCTV.
“Because I know I could score more today. But obviously the most important thing was to win in front of our fans. So it’s a good day at work, yeah.“I was looking for the hat-trick. But it’s going to be another time. But it’s good, two goals. When you play for Liverpool you just have to win games. “So, (it’s) hard to answer (what the aim now is). When you see the games coming, we are Liverpool (and) we need to win. We try to stick together, work together.
“Even today, it wasn’t easy. At the end of the game we had to stay compact, stick together, because when we are in that position it’s difficult to get a result. Happy today, because I think we deserved (it). We had a great week and let’s continue.”
The Reds return to action next Saturday away to Tottenham Hotspur.
