Mohamed Salah returned to action for Liverpool against Brighton on Saturday and played a key role in their victory over the Seagulls
Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has broken Wayne Rooney’s record for the most Premier League goal involvements for a single club. The forward assisted Hugo Ekitike’s second goal against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday as Arne Slot’s side earned a 2-0 home win.
Salah has dominated headlines over the past week after an incendiary post-match interview following last weekend’s 3-3 draw at Leeds United where he claimed he had been “thrown under the bus”. The Egyptian also cited a breakdown in his relationship with Reds’ head coach Slot.
The 33-year-old has been dropped to the bench in recent weeks and was left out of Liverpool’s squad entirely for their trip to Inter Milan in midweek. He returned to the Reds’ squad against Brighton this weekend after talks with Slot.
And Salah played a key role in Saturday’s victory over the Seagulls after coming on as a substitute for defender Joe Gomez, who picked up a first-half injury. Liverpool’s star attacker went on to contribute a Premier League record 277th goal involvement for Ekitike’s second-half finish as Slot’s men earned a vital three points at Anfield.
Salah’s 188 goals and 89 assists for the Reds has seen him overtake Wayne Rooney’s 276 for Manchester United (183 goals, 93 assists). The forward will now jet off to the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco as he looks to help Egypt win their first AFCON title since 2010.

Salah has claimed that the Brighton game could represent his last outing as a Liverpool player, given he is set to join his nation until potentially January, when the mid-season transfer window opens up.
He said: “I called my mum and dad and told them to come to the Brighton game. It doesn’t matter if I play or not. I’m going to enjoy it.
“I am just going to be at Anfield and say goodbye to the fans before the Africa Cup of Nations, because I don’t know what is going to happen when I am there.
Former Liverpool player Jamie Redknapp has also cast doubt on Salah’s future on Merseyside. Speaking before Saturday’s game – he stated that there is “no way” Salah will stay if he is not starting consistently.
He said: “As good as Salah has been, everything comes to an end.
“It does feel that something has to give. There is no way that Mo Salah is going to be content to be a bit-part player.
“Whether it is in January or in the summer… I can only see that outcome.
“Once the trust is broken, especially with someone like Mo, who needs confidence and love from a manager… I feel it is going to come to a head.”
