Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah was left out of a 1-0 win against Inter Milan on Tuesday, offering fans a look at their team without their star forward – and some fans in the Liverpool Echo comments section say that if Salah does leave in January, as was hinted at in his explosive interview at the weekend, the squad would remain competitive.
Salah’s rare post-match interview after the draw with Leeds threatened to derail Liverpool’s season, with mentions of a broken relationship with manager Arne Slot, and claims of unnamed figures at the club wanting to throw him “under the bus” for poor results. The club responded by excluding him from selection against Inter Milan, resulting in a 1-0 win against the venerable Italian club.
Salah had hinted that he may not return to the club after his involvement in Egypt’s AFCON campaign, pointing towards a possible January transfer window exit. He was due to join up with his national team after this weekend’s game against Brighton, but it remains to be seen if he will be selected for what could be his final Premier League game of the year.
Liverpool’s legendary forward still has tremendous star power, but there are very destinations that could afford his wage demands if the situation is still unresolved in January. He had admirers amongst the Saudi Pro League clubs, who have been interested in luring him away from England for some time.
Some fans think that Salah should be allowed to leave if he wants to go, and that the club will be fine without him. We looked a lot better without him, the team look more solid, defensively, in midfield and forward. A great servant and a legend, but there comes a time in every players career where it’s time to move on.”
