Matheus Cunha had a golden chance to do just that but saw an effort blocked, and West Ham grew increasingly confident.

Jarrod Bowen then managed to win a corner, an area of extreme weakness for The Hammers at their own end, and nodded goal-bound from Andy Irving’s inswinging corner, with the ensuing clearance only landing as far as Soungoutou Magassa, who made no mistake from close range.

“We should have closed the game with the ball because the game was there to win,” he told BBC Sport.

“We knew that we needed to defend the advantage far from our goal but the long ball, Bowen won the first touch and took it to the corner and tried to win the corner.

“They won the corner and we cannot suffer a goal.

“I think the overall performance was not perfect. We had our moments but we lost control in the game in some minutes in the first half and in the second half, especially after the goal.

“The game was clearly ours to win and we had an opportunity with Cunha to finish the game.”

“It’s frustrating, it’s angry. That’s it,” he added in his post-match press conference.

Amorim’s compatriot Dalot was celebrating his first-ever Premier League goal at Old Trafford just before the hour mark, but the celebrations were short-lived.

He echoed the thoughts of his manager after the match and challenged his teammates to find a solution to getting “anxious” when taking the lead.

“Obviously disappointed, 1-0 up with 30 minutes to go. I think we need to control much more the game, especially at Old Trafford. We cannot get as anxious as we got after the goal,” he told Sky Sports.

“Maybe a little bit more sloppy with the ball possession. Obviously disappointed with the draw, we had the game there.

“It is that solution that we need to find. It can be various things. It should not be like this because you are fighting for 60 minutes to score a goal and then when it happens, you should keep doing the same things, even more controlling, a bit longer possession, so we can have more dominance.

“The play that goes to the corner we conceded from, I think that is the type of play we need to avoid, especially against teams that are good on the counter.

“We knew today they were going to be looking for counter-attacks and set plays and unfortunately we could not hold a result and in the end, we have to look to ourselves. I think it is more our fault than credit to West Ham.

“It is a great feeling (scoring at Old Trafford). Every time you have the opportunity to score for the football club it is amazing, especially at the Stretford End, but in the end the taste is not the same. I would change that for the three points without thinking.”
