She returned to Barcelona and underwent surgery, and the Catalan club have now confirmed her recovery time.
In a short statement published on social media, the club said: “First-team player Aitana Bonmatí has undergone successful surgery for the transdesmal fracture of her left fibula.
“This surgery was performed by Dr. Antoni Dalmau at the Hospital de Barcelona, under the supervision of the Club’s Medical Services. The expected recovery time will be around five months.”
The three-time Ballon d’Or winner suffered the injury during a morning session on Sunday at the national team’s training base in Las Rozas, Madrid.
She was advised to return to Barcelona for treatment, where she underwent surgery.
A five-month absence would keep her out for almost the entire season.
Barcelona’s final Liga F game of the season takes place on May 31, 2026. The UEFA Women’s Champions League final is scheduled to take place on the previous weekend.
Bonmati had played 77 minutes in last Friday’s first leg in Kaiserslautern, which ended in a goalless draw, leaving Spain needing a strong performance at home to secure the title.
The timing of the injury is particularly disappointing for both player and nation, with the second leg taking place on Tuesday.
Bonmati has been a central figure for Spain this year, helping guide her country to the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final, and playing a key role in Barcelona’s domestic dominance.
At club level, she achieved a domestic treble with Barcelona, winning the Primera Division, Copa de la Reina and Supercopa de Espana.

Bonmati’s individual accolades also highlight her standing in world football.
UEFA named her the Women’s Champions League Player of the Season.
Her absence will be a significant blow to Spain as they prepare to host Germany in the decisive second leg on Tuesday at the Estadio Metropolitano.
Spain, who are the reigning Nations League champions, were hoping to leverage Bonmati’s creativity, vision, and goalscoring ability to break the deadlock from the first leg.
La Roja are already without fellow Barca midfielder Patri Guijarro, who is also currently sidelined through injury, meaning coach Sonia Bermudez must find solutions in midfield.

In 15 appearances for Barcelona across all competitions this season, Bonmati has contributed six goals and four assists, underscoring her continued influence in the heart of the midfield.
Bonmati – who has now suffered a fibula fracture for the first time in her career – explained that while she was able to continue playing with the issue, it prevented her from being at 100%.
Her previous injury history has included a thigh adductor problem in June 2024, a soleus injury in August 2022, and viral meningitis in June of this year.

Barca still have five more fixtures to fulfil before the end of the year, including two Champions League matches.
The Catalan side remain well positioned both domestically and in Europe.
They lead Liga F by six points after 12 matches and sit atop their Champions League group on goal difference ahead of Olympique Lyonnais, reflecting their consistency and depth across all competitions.
