Crystal Palace are doing things better than Manchester United, explains Ruben Amorim ahead of Premier League clash at Selhurst Park

Palace have enjoyed a hugely successful year, winning their first ever major trophy – the FA Cup – and qualifying for Europe for the first time.

They sit in fifth place in the Premier League table going into this weekend, having lost just two of their 12 games this season.

United and Palace both play with a similar 3-4-2-1 formation, but Amorim said United are being outperformed by Palace at the moment.

“We play in a different way and you can understand that by data. Right now, it’s hard to explain everything, but they are a different club and they are doing things better than us, so that is quite simple.

“You don’t say that all (teams who play in a) 4-3-3 play in the same way, right? We play in a different moment, we defend in a different space, we try to attack in a different way. They are just doing things better than us.”

“It’s really funny talking about the 3-4-3 system, and I think United have the highest xG in the Premier League for scoring goals,” Glasner said.

“Their team has changed. Especially in attack. They needed more goals and they invested £200 million, buying three players up front. Also, now they have players who can play very intense like (Bryan) Mbeumo.

“For me, it’s impressive to see. We compared it (their last meeting) to where they are now. I think their work-rate is much higher than it was last year and then they get the reward.”

United looked to be on a positive trajectory after their October run. But back-to-back 2-2 draws – at Nottingham Forest and Tottenham – followed by the home loss to Everton have dampened the mood.

“In our club it’s the same thing, last year we had to win every game all of the time,” Amorim said.

“We took a lot of things, a lot of criticism because we were not winning. So in our club there are no excuses.

“I’ve already spoken about Europe and I said the same thing last year when we were in Europe and I say the same thing this year – the advantage and disadvantage of not being in Europe. There are no excuses. We have to always win games.”

Amorim added that he believes United “should have more points” for their endeavours this season.

“Because we had control of some games, we had the advantage in some games, and we lost that control.

“If I look at our games we should have more points and that is really disappointing and really frustrating, especially the last game.

“This week has been tough, it should be. It was hard. The process needs to continue and we need to go to the next game, especially in our league this year – everything can change really fast. Let’s go again and focus on the next one.”

United will be without Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Harry Maguire for the match against Palace.

Amorim said that he wants to “improve the characteristics of the team”, seemingly referencing the need for another attacking wing-back like Amad Diallo.

“The last game, we should have an Amad with the right foot to put on the other side to play against 10 men. So, it’s these kinds of characteristics that in time we will try to get to, to be a better team.

“So, if we are at the perfect set-up to play in this way? Not yet. But like any other team, we need time to put the right characteristics in every single position to be prepared for that.”
