Ruben Amorim says Manchester United lacked quality and fluidity during Wolves draw in Premier League

‘A lot of things you guys don’t see’ – Amorim explains why Fernandes is ‘a great leader’

Rob Edwards’ side arrived at Old Trafford with just two points to their name after 18 fixtures, on course to break Derby County’s record for the lowest points tally in the history of the Premier League.

The Red Devils took the lead in the 27th-minute through Joshua Zirkzee, but Ladislav Krejci got his side back on level terms before half-time.

Amorim admitted that his side did not create enough chances against the Premier League’s bottom side.

“Everyone turned up expecting a win, maybe a comfortable one, and it wasn’t that,” he said.

“We are in a situation where a lot of players are out at the same time. Today, we could win, but we had a lack of fluidity, a lack of quality, and a lack of creation of chances.

“Then we suffered a goal with a set-piece. These details are important to win games in difficult moments.”

Derby County set the record for the worst Premier League season ever during the 2007/08 campaign, when they finished bottom of the table with just 11 points to their name.

The draw means Wolves now have three points after 19 games, ahead of a clash with fellow relegation candidates West Ham on January 3.

It also leaves Manchester United in sixth place in the Premier League table, two points behind bitter rivals Liverpool in fourth place.
They will kick off 2026 with a trip to Elland Road to face old foes Leeds United on January 4, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

The Red Devils were without several key players for the clash with Wolves, including Bryan Mbeumo, who is away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes were also absent due to injury, and Amorim insists things will be different when his stars return to the starting 11.

“Of course, when you play Casemiro and (Manuel) Ugarte in the middle, you know that is different to when you have Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount or Bruno (Fernandes),” he said.

“That is normal. So, we just need to recover our players and the (other) players to return from AFCON, then the fluidity is going to be different.”

The next 12 months will be important for Amorim, who is under pressure to guide his team toward progress in 2025.

He insists that he still feels confident despite a disappointing end to the year.

“I’m really confident,” he added. We just need to recover all the players. I don’t know what is going to happen until the end of the season. Then we will make the resume of the season.

“But I’m really confident that when we recover all the players, we are going to be a strong team. There is no doubt in my mind.”
