Liverpool players have continued to show Florian Wirtz their support in the day since his first goal for the club helped defeat Wolves
Liverpool players have continued to show their love for Florian Wirtz in the aftermath of Saturday’s 2-1 win over Wolves. The German midfielder’s goal capped off a fine performance to end a challenging calendar year on a high.
Wirtz completed a stunning £116m transfer from Bayer Leverkusen in June, which before Alexander Isak joined him at Liverpool was enough to become the British-record sum. In the months since, the 22-year-old has needed time to adapt to new surroundings and teammates, who have struggled as a collective.
But the Reds finish 2025 with four wins in as many outings and Wirtz now has true lift-off from a personal standpoint in his own Anfield career.

He commemorated his first strike on Instagram with a series of photos capturing the moments of celebration with teammates in front of the Main Stand. Liverpool’s players looked ecstatic to see their teammate score, and continued to show their appreciation on Wirtz’s post.
Alexander Isak, Curtis Jones, Dominik Szoboszlai, Federico Chiesa, Giovanni Leoni, Hugo Ekitike, Ibrahima Konate, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Oakley Cannonier, Rio Ngumoha, Ryan Gravenberch, Virgil van Dijk, Wataru Endo, and Will Wright all liked the social media entry.
On top of that, several of those mentioned left comments. Leaving red love hearts were Isak, Kerkez, and Frimpong – Wirtz’s close friend who moved alongside him from Leverkusen, and assisted Gravenberch’s opener in Saturday’s win.
Gravenberch and Jones sent fire emojis, whilst Konate’s response was eye-catching. The defender left one zipped mouth emoji, and chose not to elaborate.
Wirtz has had a large number of critics in the time it has taken him to register a goal since his nine-figure transfer to Liverpool in the summer, however they were few and far between after he was the difference-maker against Wolves.
Speaking to BBC Sport after ending his goal drought, Wirtz said: “It was very nice the feeling on the pitch with the fans around. I was very happy and I still am.
“I was confident that I would score one day. I wanted to start earlier scoring and assisting but it was like this and I have to accept it. I just know that it will come and I try to keep going like that.
“We played a brilliant first half. Everyone was working hard. In the last 20 minutes, we made it a bit difficult. I cannot explain why. We have to change that.
“That’s how we want to do it. We want to be there and be on top of the table. It’s not been an easy start for us but we’re doing better and getting the points.”
