Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka has publicly backed his decision to stay at the Bundesliga giants during the January transfer window, despite sustained interest from Premier League club Arsenal and other European heavyweights.
In a candid interview, the 31-year-old Germany international said he made a “conscious decision” to remain at Bayern Munich to see out the season and challenge for major silverware, rather than pursue a mid-season transfer. With his contract set to expire in June, Goretzka admitted the timing wasn’t right to depart mid-campaign and he believes the current squad has the potential to achieve success across competitions
Speaking to the club’s official website, Goretzka said: “In winter, I made a conscious decision to stay here until summer. I feel that anything is possible this season.”
Goretzka’s remarks follow intense speculation in recent months linking him with a move to the Premier League, particularly to ARSENALwhere manager Mikel Arteta is understood to value the midfielder’s physicality and experience. Reports also suggested other clubs in Italy and Spain had tracked his situation as his current deal approaches expiry.
Bayern officials have publicly acknowledged Goretzka will leave the club when his contract expires this summer, bringing to a close an eight-year chapter at the Allianz Arena. The club’s desire to refresh the midfield and reduce wage commitments means they will not offer the veteran an extension, despite his solid contributions this season

ARSENAL – The Gunners remain one of the most credible destinations, with ongoing links suggesting the Gunners are ready to launch a decisive bid for his signature. Given Arteta’s desire for tougher midfield options and the allure of the Premier League, this move makes sense both competitively and financially.
Juventor or Milan – Reports indicate Italian clubs have monitored Goretzka’s situation closely. Juventus and AC Milan could appeal to him with the prospect of a leadership role in one of Europe’s top leagues; however, salary demands may complicate negotiations.
Other European clubs – Atletico Madrid and even some Bundesliga sides are understood to be interested, though these options appear less likely unless Goretzka prioritises proximity to home over competitive ambition.
