Martinelli sets new Arsenal record

The Brazilian became the first Gunners player ever to score in five consecutive Champions League games, having previously converted against Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Olympiacos and Athletic Club. He was not in the squad that won away to Slavia Prague owing to a minor injury.

His goal against Brugge was an exceptional one and he earned the praise of former Arsenal defender Martin Keown on TNT Sports co-commentary.

“I think his confidence would have been wounded a little bit, because he’s been a bit of a bit part player for so many years playing on that left,” he said. “That just says, ‘Look, don’t forget about me, I’m still here. Look at the quality I have.’

“There are lots of players that can talk a good game when the competition comes, but he’s really dealt with that exceptionally well because he’s come off the bench on many occasions to score really good goals, and he’s done it from the off here.”

Arsenal blood newest youngster in 16-year-old Salmon

While Max Dowman has been in the spotlight this season as the wonderkid at Arsenal, he is clearly not the only promising youngster emerging at the club.

Defender Marli Salmon, 16, made his Champions League debut against Brugge, becoming the fourth-youngest player ever to feature for the first team after his introduction as a late second-half substitute.

Salmon, who was an unused substitute in last weekend’s Premier League defeat at Aston Villa, is also the sixth-youngest player ever to make a Champions League appearance.

“He was ready, he was prepared,” said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta. “He can play as a centre-back or as a full-back, and I’m delighted.

“He’s so young, 16 still, and he’s playing in the Champions League. So what a great night for him as well.”

It might have been a very different night for PSV had Couhaib Driouech made what appeared to be the obvious decision to shoot when clean through on goal.

The 23-year-old forward, making his first Champions League start this season having scored three goals as a substitute, was teed up on the left of the box, one-on-one with Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak.

It was a gilt-edged opportunity for the Dutch side to go 2-0 up after Guus Til’s 10th-minute opener, which was assisted by Driouech. But Driouech, perhaps overawed by the presence of the imposing Oblak, chose instead to pass across goal. Atletico cleared and the home crowd groaned in disbelief.

Julian Alvarez soon equalised before David Hancko and Alexander Sorloth scored early in the second half to give the visitors victory. Ricardo Pepi did pull a goal back for PSV late on.

Mohammed Kudus had one thought on his mind after dispatching a penalty to give Spurs a 2-0 lead against Slavia Prague: to run to the corner flag and perform his clearly choreographed celebration.

The Ghanaian retrieved a stool from the sidelines, placed it down and sat on it, cheering towards the camera, while Richarlison and Djed Spence sat either side of him on (slightly larger) stools of their own.

Erling Haaland made his presence felt early on against Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

Towering above defender Raul Asencio, the Manchester City centre-forward, irritated by some overly tight marking, pushed his opponent away with his left arm.

While it seemed effortless, Asencio was sent flying to the ground by the sheer power of the Manchester City striker.

“I suggest that’s a physical mismatch,” said Darren Fletcher on TNT Sports commentary.

There was no mincing of words between Keown and Julien Laurens on TNT Sports’ Goals Show as they analysed the decision to award Monaco a penalty in their clash with Galatasaray.

Former Liverpool forward Takumi Minamino was caught in the box by ex-Spurs defender Davinson Sanchez, and Laurens felt a spot kick was the correct outcome. Keown, though, sided with the defender and suggested Minamino had made the most of any contact.

When Denis Zakaria’s penalty was subsequently saved, Keown said: “Is that justice? I didn’t think it was really a penalty.”

Laurens replied: “No, it’s a penalty. What?! He kicks him.”

“Am I biased now?” Keown said. “He put his leg across his opponent. I don’t agree.”

An in-depth argument about Minamino’s movement in the box ensued. “Julien, you’re crazy,” Keown said. “If you really know the nuances of the game, it shouldn’t be a penalty.”

Galatasaray had held out well against Monaco, frustrating the hosts for more than an hour – including the aforementioned missed penalty.

Goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, who saved the spot kick, picked up an injury, though, and was forced off. On came 34-year-old Gunay Guvenc, who had made just one appearance since August.

And his rustiness was immediately apparent. Having jogged onto the pitch, he was immediately faced with a Monaco corner. The set-piece was delivered towards the six-yard box and dropped kindly for Folarin Balogun, who diverted the ball in, while Guvenc was left floundering.

A tough introduction, though he did not concede again as Monaco saw out a 1-0 win.
