A door could be opened for Federico Chiesa to get more involved in the Liverpool squad, as Mohamed Salah’s position in the club grows ever uncertain
Mohamed Salah’s turbulent situation at Liverpool could see Federico Chiesa become more involved in the squad amid fresh transfer interest from Italy. The Egyptian looks close to leaving the club despite signing a new two-year contract at the end of last season.
After being benched for three consecutive games, Salah accused the club of scapegoating him and revealed that his relationship with Arne Slot had deteriorated. The 33-year-old winger is unsure whether Brighton will be his final game for Liverpool, with preparations for AFCON beginning next week.
Chiesa joined Liverpool from Juventus last year in a deal worth £10m plus £2.5m in add-ons. Despite leading the line at times in Serie A, the Italian international has seen limited Premier League minutes since arriving at Anfield.

Because of his lack of game time, Chiesa has often been linked with a move away. And now, despite continued interest from Italy, the 28-year-old may have found a way back into Slot’s plans.
According to Italian outlet TuttomercatowebAS Roma and Napoli have enquired about the winger in “recent days.” Both clubs are considering a loan move, which could benefit Chiesa and Liverpool.
However, Liverpool’s No.14 may want to wait, as Salah’s uncertain future could directly impact his own situation at the club.
Chiesa may have hoped that Salah’s recent spell on the bench would open the door for him to earn minutes. That hasn’t happened over the past week, but if Salah continues to be left out – as is the case for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Inter Milan – Chiesa could get his chance to stake a claim.
His importance could grow even further if Salah decides to leave in January. The Egyptian admitted in his explosive comments that he is unsure what will happen after Saturday’s match against Brighton.
Despite facing similar bench frustrations, Chiesa has continued to work hard in an attempt to break into Arne Slot’s starting XI. He has even turned down multiple Italy call-ups to stay fully fit and focus on his club form.
Chiesa still hopes to represent Italy at the 2026 World Cup, but knows consistent minutes and strong performances in the Premier League are essential to remain in contention.
Italy manager Gennaro Gattuso told reporters, via Football Italia: “I often talk to him. We have to respect the decisions and problems that each of us has. We know well what we tell each other, and I must respect what the player tells me. I can’t say anything else.”
While Chiesa won’t be pushing Salah out of the door, the Egyptian’s potential exit would leave a sizeable hole on the right wing, and the 28-year-old could finally have the opportunity to fill it.
