Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn has told Mikel Arteta how he can unlock Myles Lewis-Skelly.
Arsenal are currently top of the Premier League table heading into the last seven games of the season. Mikel Arteta‘s side have a nine point lead at the top of the table, and are in pole position to secure the title this season.
The Gunners have seen several players perform well this year, but there are some names who have surprisingly regressed since last year. Myles Lewis-Skelly is one of those names, as he has lost his starting left-back role to Riccardo Calafiori.
Transfer rumours are now suggesting that Lewis-Skelly could leave the club in the summer amid interest from rivals Man United. But would it be worth Arteta trying something else with the 18 year-old.
Arteta told to play Lewis-Skelly in midfield
Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn believes that Arsenal should play Myles Lewis-Skelly as a midfielder, which is where the English youngster played during his time at the Gunners’ youth academy.
Lewis-Skelly moved to left-back before coming into Arteta’s starting XI last season, but he is more than capable of moving back into midfield.
Winterburn told PariuriX.com: “Personally, I would love to see him (Lewis-Skelly) play in that midfield role, and I felt for him because that’s where I watched him play as a kid and when I did my co-commentating.
“I think Mikel Arteta just felt left back was the best position for him to come through at that time. I felt for him when Califiori got injured, and I saw the team sheet, and I thought Myles Lewis Skelly would play in midfield. He has to. All of a sudden, Myles Lewis Skelly had to play left back so that was disappointing.
“He’s got to keep pushing in training and work on his defensive game. He’s still a very highly thought of young player.”
