Viktor Gyokeres was the hero for Sweden on Tuesday, with the Arsenal star scoring an 88th-minute winner to send Graham Potter’s team to the World Cup via the play-offs

Arsenal star Viktor Gyokeres has followed in the footsteps of Cole Palmer and Kylian Mbappe by trademarking his goal celebration. Gyokeres, 27, forms a mask-like shape with his hands whenever he scores, doing so four times over the recent international window.
The striker scored an inspired hat-trick against Ukraine before bagging a late winner against Poland sent Sweden to the World Cup via the play-offs. Gyokeres performed the celebration again after full-time, with hundreds of fans behind him doing the same.
Swedish outlet The Express have now revealed that at the beginning of last year, Gyokeres and his representatives submitted documents to the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) to trademark the celebration. It was granted in mid-September, shortly after his £64million move to Arsenal was completed.
In November 2025, Chelsea star Palmer was successful after bidding to trademark his signature celebration, in which he rubs his arms across his chest, as well as his nickname, ‘Cold Palmer’. Real Madrid forward Mabppe did the same for his celebration in 2024.

Gyokeres used to be secretive about the meaning behind his celebration. But two years ago, the Swede published a video on Instagram with the caption: “Nobody cared until I put on the mask.”
The words are a quote from Batman villain Bane, who was portrayed by English actor Tom Hardy in the 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises. Bane wears a mask similar to the one which Gyokeres shapes with his hands.
The 27-year-old had a quiet night until the 88th minute on Tuesday. A goalmouth scramble saw the ball fall kindly to Gyokeres after it hit the post, and he smashed his effort home to send Stockholm wild.

Following their dramatic 3-2 win, Sweden – who are managed by Englishman Graham Potter – will now join Japan, the Netherlands and Tunisia in Group F at the World Cup. Gyokeres’ focus until then will be on helping Arsenal win a potential Treble.
The Gunners travel to Southampton this Saturday for an FA Cup quarter-final before resuming their Champions League campaign away to Gyokeres’ former club, Sporting Lisbon. Then comes a Premier League game at home to with Bournemouth next Saturday.
