Neil Robertson’s Masters victory against Chris Wakelin could have seen a lucky punter secure a 17 million to one windfall after a stunning run of results. The 43-year-old booked his spot in the second round of the competition with a 6-2 success on Wednesday.
And while his win in isolation would not be that odd, coupled with the rest of the results in the opening round, it produced a freak set of scores. All eight opening ties in the competition produced identical results, with each match finishing 6-2.
Chinese pair Xiao Guodong and Wu Yize beat Mark Selby and Shaun Murphy respectively, while Zhao Xintong progressed past Gary Wilson. Mark Allen also secured his own 6-2 win against Mark Williams.
The unusual set of results continued with John Higgins progressing past Barry Hawkins, while Kyren Wilson beat Si Jiahui. Wednesday’s results ended in the same way, with Robertson overcoming Wakelin.

Speaking after his win, he said: “I wasn’t even thinking about winning the match – I was thinking just win it 6-2. I didn’t know if someone in the audience had maybe had a pound on all the matches being the same scoreline or something.
“It is amazing. I hope I have made someone a multi-millionaire. I have never seen anything like that before.”
According to Ladbrokes, an accumulator predicting the correct scores would have been offered odds of over 17 million to one. Judd Trump ensured the trend continued with his own win against Ding Junhui.
“I feel confident and have got to a few finals recently and it has taken some good players to stop me,” Trump said. “I am full of confidence and hopefully I can go one better this tournament. I have had a month off tournaments but still been putting the work in.”

“I convinced myself my game would not be 6-2 and at 3-0 up I thought, ‘at least I can’t lose 6-2’,” he added.
Seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry was left stunned by the run of results. He said: “It is phenomenal. You would normally at least three 6-5 scores because of the nature of the tournament. It has been incredible. After the interval players have really stepped up.”
The Masters continues on Thursday with a double-header of quarter-final matches. John Higgins takes on Zhao Xintong, while Trump clashes with Allen in the evening session. Ladbrokes are offering odds of of 400/1 for all quarter-finals to finish 6-2.
Reigning champion Shaun Murphy will not be able to defend his crown, having been knocked out in the opening round.
