Viktor Gyokeres has been ridiculed after appearing to blame a dry pitch for Arsenal’s damaging defeat against Bournemouth. The Gunners slipped up in a 2-1 loss against the Cherries on Saturday, potentially opening the door for Manchester City in the Premier League title race.
Gyokeres scored from the penalty spot after a handball by Ryan Christie, but Arsenal were well beaten at home. Junior Kroupi put Bournemouth ahead early on before Alex Scott provided the winner with a cool finish after a flowing move.
Arsenal’s £64million summer signing had a few half-chances at the end of the match, but couldn’t find a second equaliser. Defeat means City can cut the gap to six points with a win over Chelsea on Sunday before playing Arsenal next weekend at the Eithad Stadium.
Gyokeres was one of the Arsenal players to face the media post-match and his interview with Match of the Day quickly caught the eye on social media. “We had some okay chances at the end,” he said. “The pitch was maybe a bit dry there to be honest, so that didn’t help, but of course like I said we all need to do better and take our chances.”

The comments were brutal. “A bit dry? Are you being serious? It’s been dry for both teams. Come on man,” one reply read. “Bro doesn’t remember that’s it’s actually their own home,” a second wrote, while a third joked: “Maybe should’ve poured a bottle of water on it…ah I forgot – they haven’t got bottle.”
Gyokeres and his team-mates will now turn their attention to the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final against his old club Sporting on Wednesday, before the all-important clash with City on Sunday.
“Very confident,” he said when asked about Arsenal turning their form around after three defeats in the last four games in all competitions. “I think we don’t need to get stuck too much on what happened today. We need to look forward, think positive and look forward to the games.”

Gyokeres also spoke to TNT Sports after the loss. “I think we could have played much better in both halves really,” he said. “We didn’t control the game well enough. And they’re a good side so when they get some chances, they will make it difficult for us and we had to do better there and then, of course, attacking wise do more.”
Asked if Arsenal were disjointed, he replied: “Yeah, I think we had a good feeling before the game and during the game we were ready for everything, but they made it difficult for us and we made it difficult for ourselves and that’s why the end result is like it is. It always hurts when you lose.
“We have a lot of games still to play and we know how good we are – we just have to show it on the pitch. We have to get back into that rhythm that we can play in and believe in ourselves.”
