Former Premier League striker Jay Bothroyd has claimed that Morgan Rogers is already at the level required to start for Arsenal, insisting the midfielder-turned-attacker would “walk into” Mikel Arteta’s side next season.
Rogers, currently impressing for Aston Villa, has become one of the Premier League’s standout breakthrough stars, drawing attention from several top clubs. His performances under Unai Emery have sparked widespread praise, but Bothroyd’s comments mark one of the strongest endorsements yet of the 23-year-old’s rapid rise.
Speaking on his weekly analysis show, Bothroyd argued that Rogers’ dynamic style, technical ability and physical presence already place him among the league’s most complete young attacking midfielders. Bothroyd told Sky Sports: ‘ARSENAL… he walks into Arsenal’s team.
‘He plays week in, week out on the left-hand side, we (Arsenal) need a player who can play on the left-hand side, he’s got that in abundance.
‘He can do it (play on the left wing), we don’t want another (Gabriel) Martinelli, trust me. I feel like with (Eberechi) Eze, he’s probably Arsenal’s No.10, I would like to see Morgan Rogers playing there and tucking inside, I think he’s a great player.
‘When you mention Bayern Munich, I don’t think Bayern Munich is the one. You’ve got Luis Diaz there, he’s playing unbelievably well, then you’ve got (Jamal) Musiala who is coming back, Lennart Karl, who is a fantastic young player, then obviously (Michael) Olise. I don’t think Rogers would fit into that if he wants to play week in, week out. PSG are a similar thing, they’ve got some great attacking players.
‘I think the one that stands out is Arsenal. Even Manchester United, maybe, but I feel they’ve got (Matheus) Cunha, (Bryan) Mbeumo, (Bruno) Fernandes will probably play as a No.10 next season higher up when they sign their midfielders.
‘I feel like Arsenal is the one where he can say, ‘I’m going there and I’m going to play week in, week out’.’
Could Rogers really start for Arsenal?
Bothroyd’s claim is bold — and perhaps only partly accurate.
Rogers has the talent, drive and versatility to thrive in a top side. His ball-carrying ability and physicality would add qualities Arsenal lack, particularly when breaking down compact defences. He also fits Arteta’s tactical mould: disciplined, creative and intelligent in transition.
However, breaking into ARSENAL’s starting XI is no small task. Their attacking midfield and wide roles are highly competitive, with established players delivering consistently. While Rogers could become a valuable rotational piece, walking straight into the XI is far from guaranteed
