The Canada curling team have been in the headlines for the wrong reasons over the course of their time at the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, before their match against Team HB

BBC co-commentator Steve Cram has called for Winter Olympic officials to address the Canada curling team over their use of bad language. The Canadians dealt Team GB a huge blow by beating them 9-5.
Brad Jacobs’ side have attracted controversy for the wrong reasons in Milan and Cortina. The BBC was forced to apologise after Canada third Marc Kennedy became embroiled in a foul-mouthed exchange with Swedish player Oskar Eriksson earlier in the competition.
Kennedy also faced accusations of double-touching his stone during his nation’s win over Sweden, leading World Curling to release a statement clarifying the rules. Yet the BBC commentary team once again found themselves criticising the Canadians’ language.

During a break in Tuesday’s match, the Canadians could be heard swearing amongst themselves whilst TV cameras were positioned just feet away, drawing disapproval and exasperation from Cram and co-commentator Logan Gray.
After one Canadian team member was heard saying “every f***ing time” after they secured a point, Cram said: “Excuse me,” with an audible sigh of irritation.

Cram, who also has extensive experience commentating on athletics, added: “They have to have a word with these Canadians,” prompting Gray to then say they had “potty mouths”.
At that point, Canada had just secured a 3-1 lead after the third end. It was a crucial throw, as Mouat’s team had two scoring stones, but Jacobs’ side capitalised on the hammer by drawing in a point.

Whilst not on television or within earshot of microphones, Mouat’s team will now be the ones cursing. He led Team GB to the Olympic silver medal in the 2022 Games, but the loss to Canada means they are facing an uphill battle to reach the last four.
GB suffered an 8-6 loss in their last round robin match against Norway which meant the clash against Canada was even more important. They needed a win over both the Canadians and the USA, who they face tomorrow afternoon, to ensure they have a spot in Thursday’s semi-final.
Now, even a win against the Americans may not be enough to get into the last four. They will have to rely on other results going in their favour if they want to compete in the semi-finals later this week.
