Boxing superstar Anthony Joshua has been injured in a fatal car crash in Nigeria with eyewitnesses describing the devastating scenes they saw

Two people in the SUV Anthony Joshua was in died on the spot following a devastating crash, according to eyewitnesses. An onlooker has described the distressing scenes as the British boxer was taken to hospital with his injuries in Nigeria.

It is said that Joshua’s vehicle was followed by his security detail and members of the public quickly acted following the incident to attempt a rescue. The SUV is reported to have collided with a stationary truck near Makun while travelling on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, in the state of Ogun.

It has been reported that Joshua’s vehicle swerved after a tyre burst and lost control. The crash isbe being investigated by local police with Ogun state traffic compliance and enforcement agency confirming that Joshua was involved in the accident.

An eye-witness, Adeniyi Orojo, told Punch newspaper: “It was a two-vehicle convoy: a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him. There was also a passenger sitting beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed. His security detail was in the vehicle behind them before the crash. “Other eyewitnesses and I began the rescue and flagged down oncoming vehicles to assist. A few minutes after the crash, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived. The passenger beside the driver and the person beside Joshua died on the spot.”

Mirror Sport spoke to Eddie Hearn, his promoter, who is currently on holiday in the Caribbean and had only just found out about the crash. Hearn understood that Joshua was OK and on his way to the hospital, but had no further information to give.

Joshua was enjoying time in his parents’ homeland of Nigeria. ‘AJ’ was born in England and won an Olympic gold medal for the United Kingdom but is often seen wearing the Nigerian flag.

The 36-year-old was visiting the nation, having defeated Jake Paul little over a week ago. Joshua knocked the YouTuber-turned-boxer out in the sixth round of a controversial bout.

The former heavyweight champion left his opponent with a jaw broken in two places. The fight went on longer than many expected but Joshua enjoyed a comfortable victory.

Joshua has teased that 2026 will be a big year for him and reignited his feud with Tyson Fury in is post-fight comments. In a post on Instagram days after the win on December 19, Joshua wrote: “A massive shoutout to the 33 million of you who tuned in to support me, Jake, and everyone on the undercard, and thank you to those who prayed for me during fight week.

“Enjoy the festive break if you’re celebrating, and have a blessed week if you’re not. Big things coming in the New Year, so stay tuned. We are all one under God’s eyes. God bless. Rastafari.”
