Liverpool name squad for Marseille trip as Mohamed Salah returns but Ibrahima Konate missing

Liverpool have named their 20-man travelling squad for the Champions League trip to Marseille

Mohamed Salah has been included in the Liverpool travelling squad for their Champions League trip to Marseille. The Egypt international took part in open training on Tuesday following his return from the Africa Cup of Nations.

The 33-year-old had sat out the Reds’ last European clash, away at Inter Milan, at the start of last month following his explosive interview after Liverpool’s 3-3 draw away at Leeds United.

But having been recalled by Arne Slot following amicable talks between the pair prior to his departure for international duty, the forward is now back in the fold for the Reds once more following his return to Merseyside.

Salah was included in a 20-man travelling squad as they departed the John Lennon Airport on Tuesday afternoon ahead of the league-phase match at Orange Velodrome.

But Ibrahima Konate was not with the group, having missed open training due to family reasons. The defender, who was not mentioned in the club release confirming the travelling party, is already in France, with it remaining to be seen if he will link up with his team-mates following their own arrival.

If he misses the clash with Marseille, Joe Gomez is likely to partner Virgil van Dijk at centre-back instead.

Even if Konate links up with the Reds, Slot will be unable to name a full 23-man squad or bench of 12 players in Marseille as he continues to work with limited numbers.

His squad included three goalkeepers, with Giorgi Mamardashvili and Freddie Woodman providing cover for Alisson Becker, as well as teenagers Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni.

There was no place for Calvin Ramsay with the Scotland international not eligible to feature in the Champions League league phase after being left out of Liverpool’s European squad for the first half of the season.

The Reds remain without long-term absentees Alexander Isak, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni.

Slot will offer an update on Konate at his pre-match press conference at the Orange Velodrome on Tuesday evening (6.40pm UK time).

Liverpool travelling party for Marseille fixture: Alisson, Endo, Van Dijk, Books, Szosslai, Macah, Salah, Josa, Gakpo, Ekitic, Robertson, Woodman, Frimpong, Graven, Nyoni, Ngumoha.
