Newcastle target defenders

The i Paper reports that Newcastle United are in the hunt for new defenders, with the sale of Alexander Isak providing plenty of cash.

Dayann Methalie of Toulouse could be in the frame later this month, while Atalanta centre half Giorgio Scalvini could be lined up for a summer deal.

The paper states: “Money is not a problem. Football finance sources, including one who works closely with Premier League clubs, estimate they have around £75m of headroom regarding profitability and sustainability rules after the Alexander Isak sale.

“With amortisation they could invest around £130m before 30 June and remain compliant – but even with injuries hitting them hard the club are talking about the bigger picture.

“That is signing players in the 19- to 24-year-old bracket and casting the net further than they did in the summer. The most realistic targets are based overseas, Toulouse defender Dayann Methalie is a definite option but things may not get moving on the France under-21 international until towards the end of the month.

“Atalanta centre-back Giorgio Scalvini, despite interest from the 22-year-old in a move to Newcastle, is not understood to be an option for January.”

Malacia faces United exit

Tyrell Malacia may leave Old Trafford in January ahead of discussions with new Manchester United manager Michael Carrick, according to The Sun.

Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu would be ahead of him in the pecking order should the club switch to a back four, as is expected.

The Sun writes: “Tyrell Malacia could still leave Manchester United this month.

“Malacia is approaching the final five months of his contract and will seek clarity from new United head coach Michael Carrick before making a decision on his future.

“The 26-year-old left back has generated some interest in this month’s transfer window but none of the options appeal to Malacia.”

Malen to join Roma

Donyell Malen is poised to join Serie A side AS Roma, initially on a loan deal, according to The Athletic.

The former Borussia Dortmund forward will then join the Serie A club on a permanent basis at the end of the current season.

The Athletic reports: “Aston Villa forward Donyell Malen is set to join AS Roma on a loan with an obligation to buy at the end of the season.

“The forward has agreed personal terms with the Italian club and is set to end his year-long stay in the Midlands.

“The overall package is worth €25m (£21.65m), plus a €2m loan fee.”

Chelsea willing to let George leave

Chelsea’s 19-year-old winger Tyrique George could be loaned or sold in the coming weeks, according to The Mirror.

The club are willing to let him leave on loan, but could be sold if a compelling offer is made.

The Mirror explains: “Chelsea are willing to sell youngster Tyrique George just months after a £22m move to Fulham fell through. The 19-year-old was close to a move to Craven Cottage late in the summer transfer window, only for the deal to collapse at the 11th hour.

“It is suggested that Chelsea are open to both a permanent or loan exit, with clubs in England and abroad among his suitors. A temporary exit would only be considered should the terms be attractive to Chelsea.

“George has made 37 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions for the Blues since breaking through from their academy, scoring six goals. But he has not featured in a matchday squad since a 2-1 defeat to Sunderland in October.”
