“The club are keen to appoint a head coach with Premier League experience after the Amorim gamble backfired, and De Zerbi made a good impression during his two seasons in charge at Brighton.

“The Italian was interviewed by Ineos in May 2024, and considered a leading contender to replace Erik ten Hag, but he had joined Marseille by the time the United boss was sacked that October. De Zerbi guided the French club to a runners-up spot behind Paris Saint-Germain last season and they are currently third behind PSG and Lens.

“The 46-year-old is under contract until 2027, but is believed to be interested in a return to the Premier League and it will be interesting to see if he comes into United’s orbit again.”

The report adds: “The club will have a number of cheaper options available, including three Premier League managers who will be free agents in the summer – Oliver Glasner, Marco Silva and Andoni Iraola.

“A number of other options are expected to open after the World Cup, not least England boss Thomas Tuchel, who was another leading contender when United were speaking to potential replacements for Ten Hag. Two other national team coaches with Premier League experience, Mauricio Pochettino and Carlo Ancelotti, may also be available.”

Enrique also a ‘main target’

Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique is one of Man Utd’s “main targets”, according to the Mirror.

United chiefs are said to want an experienced head coach and former Barcelona manager Enrique, who won the treble with PSG last season, may well fit the bill.

“Manchester United have made Luis Enrique one of their main targets in the club’s search for a permanent manager,” states the outlet.

“Candidates being considered include Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino and Carlo Ancelotti. And now it has emerged Enrique is also a target of the fallen giants. It’s understood United’s owners want to appoint someone who can handle the huge pressure and expectation that comes with being in charge.

“Enrique is said to have the ‘winning pedigree’ United need with their next appointment.

“Interestingly, Enrique will be entering the final 12 months of his PSG contract in June and has not agreed a new deal. If this is still the case come the summer, United would not have a massive amount of compensation to pay PSG.

“Speculation has mounted that he will leave the French giants this summer, although he has denied this and could still pen a new contract.”

Man Utd continue midfield search

The Guardian claim Manchester United are desperate to bolster the centre of midfield this month.

A number of players have been linked with the club, including Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Nottingham Forest’s Adam Wharton.

But, according to a new report, United may look elsewhere in their bid to strengthen their squad.

Turning to targets elsewhere, the Guardian adds: “There are, supposedly, admirers of Sassuolo’s Tarik Muharemovic at United but if they really want to acquire the centre-back’s services they will need to overcome competing interest from Tottenham and Newcastle.”

Barca in Rashford talks

Barcelona are in talks with Manchester United over the possibility of paying less than the £26 million purchase clause for Marcus Rashford.

Rashford has impressed during his time on loan with the Catalan giants, scoring seven times and contributing 11 assists.

Hansi Flick’s side are determined to keep a hold of him but are hesitant to trigger the purchase clause.

“As per talkSPORT, Barcelona are hesitant to trigger Rashford’s €30million (£26m) purchase clause and instead, aim to negotiate a reduced fee. A second loan spell, possibly with a conditional obligation to buy, has also been mooted as an alternative.

“Further talks are anticipated as the season draws to a close, with both clubs seeking a resolution. United are keen to capitalise on Rashford and believe the clause is fair, while Barcelona have the upper hand given the winger’s wish to stay at Camp Nou.

“While his dream may yet come true, the La Liga heavyweights are hoping to negotiate a more financially favourable deal before committing to the current purchase option. If an agreement is reached, it’s reported that Rashford would be offered a contract until the summer of 2029.

“The 28-year-old England international is expected to play a more prominent role in Catalonia next season if a deal can be struck, particularly with Robert Lewandowski, who turns 38 in August, out of contract at the end of the season.”
