Liverpool player ratings vs Barnsley as two score 5/10 before substitutes impress

Ian Doyle with the Liverpool player ratings and scores from the FA Cup third round tie against Barnsley at Anfield on Monday evening

Liverpool secured progress in the FA Cup with a 4-1 victory over League One side Barnsley in their third round clash at Anfield on Monday evening.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong struck excellent first-half goals until a dreadful mistake from Szoboszlai gifted former Reds striker Adam Phillips a goal before half-time that ensured a nervy encounter until substitutes Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike struck late on.

The result means Arne Slot’s side will play Premier League rivals Brighton at home in the next round in a tie that will take place on the weekend of February 14/15.

The ECHO was in attendance at Anfield and here we run the rule over the performance of the Liverpool players.

READ MORE: Liverpool 4-1 Barnsley – Dominik Szoboszlai Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike goals

Giorgi Mamardashvili 6

Watched early Keillor-Dunn header hit inside of post and beat out shot from Bland. Not much to do second half.

Jeremie Frimpong 7

Lack of height occasionally counted against him defensively but offered regular outlet down right first half and thumped in great goal. Subbed.

Joe Gomez 5

Lost Keillor-Dunn for early Barnsley chance and very rusty with passing and defending on first start in a month. Booked and subbed.

Virgil van Dijk 6

Not entirely comfortable before the break with the home side creaking a bit defensively, but twice close to scoring after break.

Andy Robertson 6

Another who looked a little short of sharpness and minimal contribution first half, but made to work more after that at the back.

Curtis Jones 6

Attempted to inject spark into Liverpool efforts but difficult with Barnsley largely playing on edge of their own area. Persistence rewarded with part in third goal.

Alexis Mac Allister 7

Saw plenty of the ball before break and laid on goals for Szoboszlai and Frimpong, but passing was otherwise a bit too safe. Subbed.

Federico Chiesa 5

No faulting effort or occasional imagination but lacked quality with his passing and looked a little short of pace. Subbed.

Dominik Szoboszlai 7

Thumped in a brilliant opener from range and did well at both ends until absolutely horrific mistake gifted Barnsley way back into game. Ended the match at right-back and did pretty well, having hand in fourth.

Ngumoha River 6

One clever run into the area before interval but otherwise bit of a learning curve up against packed defence, notably when moving to right wing. Subbed.

Cody Game 6

The sole central striker up against an awful lot of Barnsley defenders, had one shot blocked but otherwise not much service first half. Bit better when switching to left on the hour then ended on the right.

Ibrahima Konata (for Gomez 60) 6

Stuck to the basics when stepping in at centre-back.

Florian Wirtz (for Frimpong 60) 7

Featured at both number 10 and on the left during his cameo and good finish for third having earlier missed big chance and set up fourth.

Hugo Ekitike (for Chiesa 60) 7

Took a while before gaining a meaningful touch but great assist for the third and tucked away fourth.

Ryan Gravenberch (for Ngumoha 73) 6

Kept it simple in midfield.

Trey Nyoni (for Mac Allister 88)

Minutes.
