Kylian Mbappe has been omitted from Real Madrid’s squad for the Supercopa de Espana in Saudi Arabia owing to a knee injury.
Real announced their travelling squad on Tuesday with Mbappe absent; the France international missed Sunday’s 5-1 win against Real Betis as he continues to recover from a left knee sprain.

Despite a number of blips for Xabi Alonso’s side, Mbappe has been regularly on the scoresheet, providing 29 goals and recording five assists in 24 appearances this season.

In Mbappe’s absence, academy graduate Gonzalo Garcia started up front on Sunday and netted a hat-trick to maintain his side’s four-point gap behind league leaders Barcelona.

According to a report by The AthleticMbappe had been experiencing “discomfort for several weeks”. However, the striker still managed to score four goals in three league matches before his absence against Betis, having previously been an unused substitute against Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League defeat.
Speaking ahead of the Betis victory, Alonso said of Mbappe’s injury: “We’re going to push to keep the time down. It’s about feelings. We’ll do everything possible to make (his absence) as short as possible, so he can be ready as soon as possible. But when is that? That’s the question, I don’t know.”

“Now we’ll see. We’ll do everything we can to have him back as soon as possible.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, has been included in the travelling squad despite being out with a quad injury since the start of December.

Dean Huijsen, who signed for Real from Bournemouth in the summer, was also named on the squad list, having also missed the victory over Betis after returning from a thigh strain.

Alonso’s side take on city rivals Atletico Madrid in the Supercopa semi-final on Thursday. The winners will face either Barcelona or Athletic Club in Sunday’s final – with the competition available to watch via TNT Sports and discovery+.

Real were defeated 5-2 by Clasico rivals Barcelona in last year’s Supercopa final, held at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Sunday’s final will get underway at 19:00 on TNT Sports 1.
