New documentary and return of ‘Goals Show Extra’

On Friday January 9, TNT Sports will premiere a new documentary, FA Cup: The People’s Storywhich explores the triumphs, heartbreaks and untold moments that have shaped the world’s oldest domestic cup competition. Through powerful storytelling, the film examines how the FA Cup has long served as a meeting point for sport and society, capturing the spirit of a nation through the beautiful game.

The documentary is structured around five defining chapters, each reflecting a pivotal moment in the tournament’s history. It revisits the 1966 final, when Everton’s Mike Trebilcock became the first Black player to score in an FA Cup final, set against the wider backdrop of the Race Relations Act of 1965.

The story then moves to 1973, when Sunderland’s improbable triumph lifted an industrial town amid a period of widespread unrest. The 1989 final is also explored, as a city came together when Liverpool faced Everton just weeks after the Hillsborough disaster.

The film highlights a landmark moment in the women’s game with the 2015 Women’s FA Cup final – the first to be staged at Wembley – a key chapter in the competition’s growing prominence and appeal.

It concludes with the 2025 final, bringing the story into the present day and reaffirming that the magic of the FA Cup endures, as Crystal Palace overcome Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Further enhancing the FA Cup experience, TNT Sports will air a special Emirates FA Cup edition of Goals Show Extra on Saturday January 10 from 12:00 GMT. The programme will capture every goal from around the grounds, including all ten matches kicking off at 15:00 GMT.

Hosted by Matt Smith alongside Steve McManaman and Fara Williams, the show will follow the goals as they happen throughout the day. Pundits and journalists from across the country will join the studio to deliver analysis, reaction and insight, ensuring fans do not miss a single goal, upset or moment of FA Cup magic.
