In their article regarding Arsenal’s interest in Morgan Rogers, they wrote: “Arsenal could sell either of Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli owing to performance and contractual reasons.”

They then reported that Arsenal do have the option to extend Martinelli’s stay in north London by 12 months but that would be on the assumption that he’d assume a bit-part role under Arteta’s guidance.

“Trossard, 31, has a year left on his contract and has been less influential in the second part of the season. Arsenal have an option to extend Martinelli’s contract by one season to 2028 but may offer him a new, longer deal this summer if he is willing to be a squad player.”

It’s safe to say that he’s already doing this role, right? This season, the former Ituano star has started just nine matches in the Premier League – and much of his work has been done at Europe’s top table.

The fact that Arteta clearly wants to upgrade in his position may present itself as bad news for Martinelli and, in the event that he does leave, he will always be remembered as being a key part of the Arsenal revolution.

Does selling Gabriel Martinelli make sense?

On the surface, it does. Arteta and his backroom staff will be tossing and turning over whether to part ways with Martinelli, 24, or Trossard, 31, in the summer to make room for a new left winger.

Of course, Martinelli is far more attractive in terms of how much money his departure would yield. He’s much younger, has plenty of years left in the tank and has proven his ability to operate at the highest level.

In the same breath, Martinelli counts as a homegrown player.

Competition

Matches

Goals

Assists

Premier League

25

1

3

Champions League

10

6

2

League Cup

5

0

0

FA Cup

4

4

1

Gabriel Martinelli’s 2025/26 statistics for Arsenal per Transfer market (correct as of 10/04/2026

Having arrived in north London in 2019 and spent three or more years at a Premier League club before his 21st birthday, he fits the criteria – and that could come into Arteta’s thinking.

It’ll be more to do with how they suit the squad and the plan moving forward, sure, but that could play a part.
