The National Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have declared a total national strike which is to commence on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, through its leadership.
This resolution was reached on Tuesday, November 6, 2023, after an extraordinary National Executive Council meeting held by the leadership of the two unions.
The extraordinary meeting was said to have been scheduled in order to look into the modalities of the planned strike and the brutalization of the NLC National President, Joe Ajaero, whose attack received outrageous comments, with the Union accusing the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Mohammed Barde, of being an associate.
The Organised Labour on Friday, therefore, handed the Federal Government a five-day ultimatum to remove and replace Barde. The union also blamed the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, for the said attack, however, the governor has stated his non-involvement in the act.
Furthermore, the meeting was held to look into the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Federal Government and the Organised Labour on October 2, 2023.
Consequently, the union threatened to embark on a nationwide strike if their demands were not met, which among other things include the arrest and prosecution of some of the individuals who allegedly aided the governor in the attack.
